What do the letters BMI represent?
BMI is the acronym for Body Mass Index.
What is the definition of the body mass index?
Body Mass Index is the measurement or ratio of an individual’s weight versus their height.
Does a person’s BMI Body Mass Index have any effects on health?
Absolutely and according to recent findings in medical science has found a correlation between a person’s body mass index which depicts the effect of body weight on disease and mortality.
What is the index of average to obese body types?
The following chart depicts the status of each body mass indexes:
Less than 18.5 athletic - underweight
18.5-24.9 Normal
25.0-29.9 Overweight
30.0-34.9 Obese
Above 35 Morbid Obesity
What does this all mean?
The above chart shows that body mass indexes between 18 and 25 are deemed to be a healthy weight. Body Mass Index ranges between 25 and 30 are considered to fall on the level of overweight. Any BMI levels above 30 represent obesity. Obesity has been associated with a variety of serious and chronic health problems including:
Heart disease
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Sleep apnea
How can I determine my body mass index (BMI)?
To calculate your body mass index,
Take your height and multiply it by your height in inches
Then divide your pounds by the total of your height -- multiplied by itself in inches.
Then take the total and multiply it by 703
For example, a person who is 5’1 weighing 108 pounds would do the following formula:
(Weight in Pounds)/(Height in inches X Height in inches)X703
(108 pounds)/(61 inches X 61 inches)
X(times) 703 = BMI .002 X 703 = 20.4 BMI
